Stargraphs

180pxgpn2000001978_2 In Discover one of my favorite writers and thinkers, Jaron Lanier, proposes a really big idea as a way of messaging extraterrestrial life. Instead of the usual signaling methods - using radio waves, sending etchings into the cosmos - he suggests that we rearrange stars into pattern, a "graphstellation" he calls it, that would be unmistakable to observers elsewhere in the universe.
